Laptop Help - 400 budget
« on: January 26, 2011, 10:18:01 am »

I've had a few netbook/Laptop thread in the last couple of years but never actually bought one. I'm getting a bonus shortly and want to a buy a laptop and my budget is around 400. I don't have a clue about laptops so your help would be apprciated. I need one for basic use, internet, email, itunes etc. I would also like a machine capable of running Skype well, so an intergrated webcam/microphone would be good as I'm going to the Philippines for 6 weeks with work and I'd like to stay in contact with my girlfriend/family etc.

I don't have a clue about the technicalities (processor speed etc) so I'm basically going on the reviews. So far I've found this Acer:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Notebook-Pentium-Wireless-Windows/dp/B0045UBCR6/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1296036690&sr=1-1

... and this Dell, which is currently in the sale (20% off):

http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.210-4605.aspx

Can anyone advise me if either of these are any good or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Cheers

Ideally something with a Core2Duo or a I3, at least 3Gb of RAM but your pushing it for that amount of money.

Id go for the Dell if i was going to pick between the 2 you had there

Id go for something like

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/minicat/services_N00N5051_promo_uk?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

I have a thing against Acer though, got loads of them in Schools and they dont last last. When staff come to me and ask what to get for personal use i usually point them to Dell and hardly ever get any back or any complaints
