From last night's What's On.

Fringe Benefits

The legendary ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN, singer/songwriter BADLY DRAWN BOY and THE ORDINARY BOYS are to headline the 2007 Stockton Riverside Fringe Festival.

Organiser Paul Burns and band booker and promoter Andy Kelly have pulled off a major coup in securing the three headline acts for what promises to be the best Fringe ever in the festival's 17 year history.

Echo and the Bunnymen will close the whole festival on Sunday, August 5; Badly Drawn Boy will be the headliner on Saturday, August 4; and the Ordinary Boys (with or without Chantelle) close the main stage on Friday, August 3.

Negotiations are in an advanced stage to bring other high profile bands to the Stockton event but the quality of this year's main stage line-up puts the Fringe into the top rank of UK summer festivals.

The main stage will once again be on Stockton's riverside with a capacity of 10,000. This year the Fringe will include a comedy stage, also on the riverside site.

Last year home-grown talent such as Elaine Palmer, The Romance and We Start Fires performed alongside the likes of The Bluetones and the Aliens, attracting a combined audience of 20,000. More are expected this year, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.
"People will need to get down there early," says Paul. "If they turn up at quarter to nine wanting to see Echo and the Bunnymen there is every chance they won't be able to get in. It's better to come early and make a day of it."

There will be a number of music stages- including the main stage along the northern bank of the River Tees - and most genres including rock, indie, pop, accoustic, jazz and jazz/classical fusion are catered for. All Fringe events are free.
