Shutter Island
« on: March 17, 2010, 12:43:26 pm »

I went to see this last night and thought it was really good. It's pretty intense in places, with a few little things to keep you thinking all the way through.

The music builds up a really intense atmosphere. It's worth seeing it on the big screen.

I heard you have a compilation of every good song ever done by anybody. Every great song by the Beach Boys. All the underground hits. All the Modern Lovers tracks. I heard you have a vinyl of every Niagra record on German import. I heard that you have a white label of every seminal Detroit techno hit - 1985, '86, '87. I heard that you have a CD compilation of every good '60s cut and another box set from the '70s.

Parents said it was immense. Went to see it tonight but the queue was literally 30 meter out of the cinema doors and it was sold out when we got to the front, devoed.

Just watched it, didnt realise there was an R5 rip about!

Overall pretty decent. Not scorsese's best movie, cos thats Goodfellas ha ha, but thought it was really good. Ending was a nice touch, kept expecting it to turn out to be a twist within a twist but when you think about it, it makes sense. There's a lot of subtle things in there, like the defense mechanism stuff. Thought Ben Kingsley and Leonardo Dicaprio were really good.

to add to that:
the best part really is that it was put right in front of your face from the start that he was mental. you saw him hallucinating, you saw her talking about his drinking problem, the shakes etc, it talked about defense mechanisms, the doctor had the sedative ready etc) but it was done in such a way that it was believable that it was normal. I'd say thats where it differs to Identity in that it wasnt pretty obvious anyway, 6th sense style.
as wyke said the music was good and added to the drama, and i liked the dark gritty look.

Quite a lot of the old occult symbolism going on too, watched it with a few peeps on the weekend.

The ending was a bit obvious I thought.

I really enjoyed this and thought the score was awesome.

I didn't really understand why Scorsese included deliberate continuity errors mind...?

Also, there's a lot of debate about the ending
My perception is that Teddy relapsed in the end and went back to belieiving he was a cop trying to uncover the dark secrets of Shutter Island. However, others seem to believe he didn't relapse and just made the doctors think he had in order to be lobotomised as he would rather "die as a good man than live as a monster". Teddy couldn't get over the fact he killed his child-murdering wife and did not want to live with that guilt.
I personally thought it was the second option.

Some really great moments in it, the score was amazing as well
Apparently the author and Scorsese have both said Teddy actually relapses at the end and is insane, again.
yeah it follows the book. but it is open a little to interpretation i think just by the way teddy looks after he says that line at the end and the way his partner shouts out to him
