Steer clear of HSBC, there bastards for asking for there overdrafts back randomly, may look good on paper with special offers were you get free money etc,

Barclays i think is the best, you get 3k overdraft, student advisors etc. They seem to be really bothered about helping you and you can go ask for advice etc with them

I quite like my HSBC one, 1k interest free overdraft, which stays interest free for however many years you're at uni, plus they give you a fair bit of free crap for joining.

If I sign up for the offers then don't use the account are the banks liable to ask for their money back?

I got my offer confirmation slip today and it says you need that to sign up for an account.

Natwests current offer is fairly good if your moving away from home, a young persons railcard for up to 5 years (only if you stay at uni), that 1/3 off could save you some real cash, I bought one 20 per year for while I was on placement I reckon it saved me about 170 over that one year.

If youve just taken the overdraft then pretty much left the account alone they may get a bit annoyed.... Ed (Cool Mo E) knows plenty about this though I believe it was sorted easily

To get a student bank account your supposed to pay your loan cheque in,

If you dont agree to that they can fine you and ask for that stuff back

Seconded for barclays, and not just cos i work for them.

Their fees are quite low, and they wont just go "hay ok have this massive overdraft increase" they work out if you can afford it and base it on why you need it etc. the S&G advisors are pretty nice people too, and its very convenient to teesside uni if youre going there as its right on end of southfield road.

I have a graduate additions accound and i pay a fiver a month and get free mobile phone insurance, card protection, break down cover, legal advice..all sorts of shiznaz.

biggest PROTIP ever though: Never EVER take out a credit card with the same bank that you hold your current account with if youre in the situation where you may hit debt (eg students) as banks can & will clean out your bank account if you are in arrears as they are part of the same group, leaving you no money for food, rent, travel etc.

Barclays never bothered me and i was permanently in overdraft. HSBC send me a letter if i dont pay something in for 2 months.

WHAT THE SMARTEYMAN DOES:

get the biggest fucking student overdraft you can (eg 3K) dont spend it on fuck all, and pay it all into a high interest savings account. youll get regular amounts of interest which will build up nicely, but this plan only works if youre not planning on using the overdraft itself. maybe leave yourself 500.

at say..5%, thats 125 interest bonus for basically nothing.

i was with natwest why i was at uni... interest free overdraft throughout uni and for 3 years after you leave.

they were also very helpful if i needed to extend my overdraft over what is their set limit (i.e what they say you're entitled to in the brochures etc) and never charged me fees for going over my overdraft limit if a direct debit or something was paid, but i had a weekly wage going in aswell

a sandwhich toaster lol. dont be swayed by tack gifts btw, eg a sandwhich toaster costs 6.27p at tesco so it sounds like a useful thing,. but go for practical/financial gains like railcards or better overdrafts/cash bonuses
