Quote
and with no noise not being an indie night it should have ashe in the red room

Exactly. I think that would work out far better than previously.

I did go into the Purple Room from time to time, and to be honest, I much prefered that people were trying something a bit different in there. Couldn't say I was in there enough to give a fair critique of it all.

What's fairly frustrating .. are the numbers of people who moaned on the night, and then come post they had a great time on here.

I'm not trying to be a fucker to Ashe and the No-Noise people, I'm just trying to give them some blunt feedback into the night. These forums are as about as powerful tool as you can get for feedback, and I suspect with the students due back soon, any feedback into the night should be greatly appreciated even if it's not what they want to hear.

Each week I try to get some of the people from the Georgian to come along to No-Noise, but because of the music policy, they refuse to come. If this week was any indication of the future of the night, then I guess that will also be my stance on things.

I can just see the potential of it all .. and I guess my harsh words are as a result of frustration from it.

Anyhow, I'll shut the fuck up now  :diandnicolebeingsly

And to say most of you complained when they played 'trashed music' in the bar room before because it wasn't "aLt ClUb" enough haha..

I spent a lot of time in the purple room early on, and while the music played wasn't bad - it really wasn't the kind of music people want to hear when they're out. Example: I love The cooper Temple Clause, and who needs enemies is a great song, but if people dont know it they're just going to walk away, while if something like Promises Promises or Film maker will attract people who might not have even heard of them before - I personally think the early djs in the purple room just decided to play their favourite songs whether it would make a good night or not.

inexperience imo

what was played in the Red Room last night should be what they play every week .. with harder stuff in the back.

oh .. right .. i see what you mean.  excellent idea :)  lets have EVERYTHING else in the red room and a specialist hardcore room in the back, ey?

in my opinion, the only reason the "harder stuff" doesnt get played as much as some would like is because there simply isnt enough demand for it.  the majority of people that are into harder stuff go to the georgian for their weekly fix and dont bother with the arena afterwards, im sure if more people bothered to turn up or if they do go, then bother to make requests then ashe would be happy to play them a few songs.  its like a vicious circle, not much harder stuff gets played because not many people dance, and theres only so few dancing because the majority of people who want to hear it, dont turn up.   :-\

aaaaaanyways .. i had a good night, i enjoyed the room changearound and was amused at the emptyness of the back room for the first two hours of the night, hehe.

i agree your probs right but who needs enemies is a better song and was the biggest hit off the coopers first album which did alot better than the second album. I dont think the question was which coopers song to play but should the coopers be getting played at all? the requests i was getting were bands such as CKY, Korn, Slipknot, etc i dont own cds by these bands because its just not my thing so i was fighting a losing battle really being admittedly a self indulgent indie kid at a night where everyones into other stuff in general.
I think why ripper and burnsey work well are that they play really mainstream floorfilling tracks and satisfy the crowd, which is the point i know.
But i wasnt getting paid or expecting to be coming back so thought id play a set off songs i really like and hope it goes down well. Certain songs went down alright and Natalie played some good stuff too.
The thing with the purple room is unless theres a great incentive to go in there you tend not to as the red room has the bar, so unless your totally wanting to listen to indie your not really gonna venture in there. With ashe in the purple room lots of people would go in cos lots of people want to hear metal/ punk / hadcore tracks.

My opinion of it is that the red room should be Ashes set up and the purple should be more pop music based rather than its current indie bias.

non?

Maybe - although you claim you were 'fighting a losing battle' in terms of requests, I requested Radiohead, hardly out of line with what you were playing and you didn't even have that

I think guest djs should be better prepared in future - otherwise the room will always just be filled with the guest dj and their friends

I think the requests will have bene down to a lot of people not knowing that the rooms had swapped over & were just making requests as usual.

as for the purple room ive said it allalong, it needs seating. its got a class atmosphere when its full but as soon as you play a track that isnt Alist it emptys out because people think "ohill pop to the bar" as theres only those 5 arsekilling plastic chairs inthere. If there was just some seating around the edge of the room, it would improve retention of the people in there by far

aye true i couldnt be arsed bringing many cds with me though and just brought enough to cover what i planned to play i only got an hour so you tend to be greedy and not wanna play requests. same for the big hard looking bloke requesting "the libertines, dont start me now"  :nervous

yeah some seatage along the wall like those in the yellow room would be good.

Bit harsh saying 'guest djs should be better prepared in future'.  When I DJ'd the other week in the red room my set was planned meticulously both in terms of bands I like in addition to whether people there the first hour would like them AND whether they would actually dance to them.   Obviously I played some stuff that people might not have known but they were in the first 20 / 25 minutes when not many, if any, people dance anyway.

If I'd played just what I liked and not cared about how the crowd would have reacted or whether people danced it would have gone down like a big sack of poo!

Heh, I thought I was well prepared... I had a decent idea of what I was gonna play and which songs work well being played near each other - but I didn't bring anywhere near enough CDs ! But that was the first time I'd ever DJed before and I learnt a lot I think. I was gutted at one point 'cause the dancefloor had been quite busy for about 3 songs but then I had no like "crowd pleasers" left ... and yup, next song I played near enough cleared the dancefloor.

Hopefully I'll get to DJ again and I'll bring more CDs this time heh.

Also, I reckon it'd slightly defeat the point of having guest DJs if they just have an entire set of "safe" songs - it's good to hear some people play some slightly different stuff to normal. I enjoyed a fair bit of what Paul played and it was stuff wouldn't normally get to hear in a club which is cool.
