RECORD LABEL CONTACT INFO:
« on: January 27, 2004, 12:52:45 am »

I'll tidy this up at some point by the way...

BANDS: pro-tip: read their demo policies, they do not appreciate hassle even if you are the greatest band the world has never seen ;)

moderator, i suggest we start a uk/international label thread for teeside/york bands to get easy access to the people who shape our listening pleasure.

bands and labels please respect this thread. dont spam the fuck out of it.

please feel free to post record label addresses etc and we'll make it nice and easy for you all to get your stuff to the right people.

please note we cant guarantee a response, good or bad, but we, er, me and www.tenfeettall.co.uk will provide you with some info.

feel free to add your own battle of the band stuff from all over the country, labels wanting bands etc, etc etc...

this may turn out ot have a life of its own this thread, but lets give it a go and see what happens...

it might need pinning too! ;)

Demo Policy

Thanks for thinking of us, for endeavouring to keep us hip by sending in your music for our consideration. Unfortunately we have become casualties of your goodwill and can no longer reply in person to each one we receive, or take unsolicited phonecalls. Please rest assured we do listen to every tape or cdr we receive. We applaud DIY initiative so don't be disenchanted if Domino doesn't come through for you; think of Arab Strap and Aidan's cellar-full of exquisite and rare wines. Would this have been possible on Domino? No way. Blue Nun if you're lucky.

Sending Demos To Twisted Nerve | Useful Information

While we are more than happy to listen to demos and genuinely enjoy it, please read the following carefully...it should sort of help us and you.

We do (at some point!) listen to everything that is sent in. However, we often have a backlog of demos to listen to so please bear in mind that we probably won't be able to listen to anything immediately (actually a couple of weeks is probably the more realistic and honest answer to this).

Just so you know, we don't as such have an A&R 'department' and actually just tend to listen to demos during the day time in the office

Some advice...

1. The myth is that we only sign our mates. This is not true and everyone on the label has been signed on the strength of original demos. Aidan Smith, Luma Lane and many of the tracks on the Jukebox 45 Series were originally demos.

2. What we look for is music that sounds exciting and different.

3. Rather than sending us everything you have been working on please be selective and choose perhaps only what you feel are the best tracks - it's not really practical or physically possible for us to listen to a full 70 mins of all the music sent in.

4. We can accept Minidiscs, DATS or Audio Tapes, but would prefer CD-R's if at all possible.

5. Please also make sure that a contact email or number is written on the actual CD, Minidisc, DATS or Tape and not just on the case.

6. We know it's a bit shit, and we apologise in advance, but we don't have the resources to reply or comment (either by phone or email) on everything we receive. BUT if we DO like it you can be sure that we will contact you.

7. Please don't send in songs with the words 'rain' or 'summer' in.

Sending Demos To Twisted Nerve | Our Address

We get blanket bombed by bands who clearly send stuff to every label in the country - which often isn't really the sort of thing that we might release and isn't helping us to find the good stuff...so please address your demo (and so our postman gets suspicious) to ...

thanks everyone. just thought it might be useful...

www.fiercepanda.co.uk

Hello there* If you are reading this you are almost certainly an aspiring musician or almost definitely a bit confused. However, one thing we have noticed over the past couple of months is that when it comes to sending us demotapes you have many questions for Mr Bongo over at:

mrbongopanda@aol.com

Ergo, in a brave bid to save Mr Bongo's typing finger, fierce panda hereby presents a handy A4-sized guide to getting your music straight to the ears of our A&R department. And it goes something like this...

All music should be sent to here:

fierce panda records,
PO Box 21441,
London N7 6WZ.

The music should be on cassette or cdr format. We don't have a minidisc player and we are endeavouring to get our heads around MP3s and suchlike, but for the moment the surest way of being heard is the old-fashioned method.

The music should be tuneful, handsome and whacked-out. Otherwise we don't give a monkey's cuss what it sounds like or what 'demographic' it fits. fierce panda is the orthodox musical face of the company (see website discography for full details) but Rabid Badger Recordings isn't averse to some cheeky dance noodlings and the Livid Meerkat label is more experimental, having previously released records by the likes of Billy Mahonie and Rothko. Having said all that, we may be slightly unlikely to be releasing any ragga, R'N'B or Hear'Say records in the very near future...

The packaging doesn't matter. You can send a cassette in old chip paper for all we care as long as it is audible and it comes with the following information:

a) full tracklisting
b) basic biography (band line-up, place of origin)
c) telephone number
d) street address
e) email address (if possible)

fierce panda listens to absolutely all noises sent its way: we play every tape and CD all the way through, so rest assured that we won't be throwing your material out of the window after ten seconds! Each demo is listened to by fierce panda co-director Simon Williams, who uses his experience as an ex-NME journalist, ex- Xfm DJ and general all round indie chimp to gauge what's hot and what's snot in the panda demo box.

Remember that making a demo is merely the first step on a very long ladder. In the past, acts such as Seafood, Twig and Lolita Storm have earned themselves contracts with fierce panda straight from demotapes but usually the demo is part of a lengthy process involving gigs, conversations, general philosophies on life and suchlike.

Don't chase the panda A&R department up on the phone: you'll get annoyed when they haven't got around to playing your music (even tough they promised they would) and they'll get annoyed answering the phone all the time when they could be listening to demos. If you have sent all the requisite details to us and we like your demo you will most certainly hear from us.

Unfortunately it is not possible to get in touch with every band. But please do bear in mind that if a tape has been sent it will have been heard so keep us informed of all forthcoming events, especially gigs. We're mad for gigs, us. Again, you might have to play five times before we manage to see you but see you we eventually will.

And that is pretty much it. We shall leave you with a list of things you must not do, and we look forward to the noises...

DON'T
send more than three songs on your tape or cdr. Some bands say "I know you only wanted three songs but I've sent you a double album's worth of material" and we say tough tits. We don't know you. You certainly don't know us. Make it two songs only and we'll love you forever.

DON'T
make your first track eight minutes long. It gets boring. If you must be self-indulgent, do it on the last track.

DON'T
send us a demo and hassle us if you haven't got any London gigs on the horizon.

DON'T
be scared to use the frequency known as mrbongopanda@aol.com to make sure that your demo has turned up

Nice thread. If bands are gonna send stuff to these labels probably worth saying these age old points about sending stuff to labels... Only send your best two (or if you have to 3) songs and put the most eye (ear?) catching first as you want to get them interested. Even if you think your 7 minute epic is your greatest song, they're not gonna listen to it so you'd probably be better sending a shorter more listener friendly song. Send them a little biography and photo but don't bore them to death with a history that interests nobody except yourself - and don't include local press quotes because most national labels won't really care what the Gazette thinks of you sadly ! It might be a decent idea to include a list of your future gig dates as well because some labels if they do happen to like what they hear may want to check you out live. Above all though make sure your band name, phone number and email address are on the CD itself - as packaging may get lost and it'd be a bit unfortunate if a label love what they hear but have no idea who they are hearing !

Anyway, there are a lot of local punk bands round here so some of you might want to send something to:

Might be an idea to say what the labels are? Like, if you're a ska band you dont want to be sending stuff off to predominantely emo labels...alternatively you could just look at the links I guess but it might save valuable seconds that could be the difference in getting signed! Or not.

It also might be an idea for a band to do some research themselves.

That would be DIY as fuck.

Bryan, what an excellent idea.   For now, I'll stickythread it.  Jack mentioned in another thread that until we have the new board software (Which might be a while away) that we're unable to make a thread within a thread, which would be mighty useful because being in a band and record label information still comes under music.  For now, I'll police the thread and make sure there's no chit chat in here.

Wild is going to start a record label.

We have, within our ranks, people with a whole variety of label experience,
from A&R to marketing and we have various releases already planned.

Naturally we want more.
So
We would like you to send us some demos....

The classic mistake is sending out a demo because there is one, rather than
because it is actually good enough.  People are less inclined to listen to a
second demo from a band when the first one was patently a load of old
rubbish.  The quality of a recording is not important.  We are looking for
tunes, performance and ideas rather than flash production.

We don't need a ton of bumph:
A CD,
A photo,
And a website address ought to do it.

There is no particular style that we are looking at but we ain't looking for
any Pop Idol type foolishness so something that might not look too out of
place in, say, Kerrang! or NME or Jockey Slut is a good pointer.

Just a little genius is all we ask.

We are always looking out for exciting new music to work with, and listening to your demos is an important part of that process. We do try to listen to everything that is sent to us. But before you put that package in the post, please read on :

1. We're still a fairly small company - and much as we'd like to, we just don't have time to respond to everyone who sends us their music. If you don't hear from us, it almost certainly means that - for any number of reasons - our interest wasn't aroused by what you sent. We don't have a standard "rejection" letter, because we don't feel that they say anything constructive to the people who receive them.

If our interest is aroused by what we hear, then we'll get in touch - after all, that's what we do! But, we just can't take every telephone call, or reply to every email or fax. A gentle reminder might encourage us to dig your tape or CD out of the pile - but persistent hounding won't be anything other than annoying. Having said that, it's not unknown for us to offer guidance or feedback to people who get in touch with us - but we can't promise anything.

2. Debate rages in the office, but we don't think we've ever signed anything just on the strength of a demo alone. The best demos inspire us to go and see a band play live. The rest is up to you.

3. The bane of our life is people who send us music without displaying any understanding of our history and our musical interests. You're reading this on our website - so if you're not familar with the label, please take the opportunity while you're here to do some research on the kind of artists and projects that we've worked with in the past. And, to state the really obvious, we're not even faintly interested in mainstream pop of any description.

4. Please don't send music via the internet - it plays havoc with our server! We know it's more expensive, but at the moment please restrict yourselves to CDs, vinyl or cassettes. Think of it as an opportunity for self-expression...

If you feel that your music could be appropriate to LABEL, please send CD / vinyl / cassette to :

HOUSEHOLD NAME RECORDS:

Household Name Records
PO Box 12286
London
SW9 6FE

Although this is on the website, I don't understand it too much...

Don't expect too much from us - everything we've done you can do yourself. GET ACTIVE !
Don't ever write to us asking to be 'SIGNED' or address stuff toTHE 'A+R' DEPARTMENT - that stuff goes straight in the bin!
If you are looking for the trappings of security the music industry appears to offer: HOUSEHOLD NAME RECORDS IS NOT FOR YOU. We are not slave masters, we hope that all HHN bands are partners. We all get back as much as we put into it from all sides: label, bands, supporters, friends and more.
