Lets talk about illegal content
« on: October 11, 2007, 04:45:14 pm »

I'm lifting the lid on discussion of illegal content. As long as nothing and absolutely nothing is actually linked to, except directory sites and software client downloads, then I don't see the harm.

Seems so many people on here watch tv on crappy flash based websites, or spend 3 days downloading lost on a public site with 10000 peers, that it could be useful, as well as breathing some life into the computer forum.

once again though, no links to cracks, no torrent links, no nothing.

Here are the main options:

P2P Clients:

Searchable programs, generally used by the uninitiated or if youre after that one mp3 you need. Generally frowned upon due to fake files, viruses, and RIAA & their equivalents often listening in on what youre downloading, i.e see this case

Bittorrent

Very in vogue, even my dad uses it. Everyone involved sends information to everyone else so even if no one has the complete file, its possible you can still complete as someone may have the bits you need. Can work really well with a lot of seeds but often people will disconnect once theyve finished and the public sites have a huge peer to seeds ration.

The best client for windows is Utorrent. and have a look around for some public sites eg piratebay, torrentreactor, tvtorrents but once again often watched by RIAA and its ilk so the safest sites are private ratio-governed sites, which are usually much better in speeds and more of a community too.

Newsgroups

Download as fast as your pipe will allow. Grab an account at newshosting.com or giganews.com, costs just under a tenner a month but its worth it. download .nzb's (like torrent files) and load them into a client like Newsbin Pro or Newsleecher, urar, and youre laughing. Very fast as youll usually max out your connection, eg mine download at 2.25mbps constant

Direct Download

Used to be popular back in the day, but not very popular these days as legal complaints often pull sites down really quickly

Perhaps someone can make a post with popular clients these days and I will link to their websites? I dont use these so I have no idea at all whats good and what isnt.

i download all lost / prison break / heros / movies etc
takes me aprox 5mins for an episode in very good quality

movies take 5-10 mins depending on size of course, i get them pretty quick, and the quality depends on how long the movies been out.
i dont like watching bad quality stuff tho, so i wait a week.

Also get all me software this way, newest photoshop, lightroom 1.2 etc

aye i didnt like it at first, but constant 2000kb/s downloads are for the win. especially good for WMV content to watch on the 360 without transcoding for the bigger shows, and movies, and high quality high def rips for the rest. movies i generally stick to dvd or 720p content except for older stuff

yeah, obviously usenet is the best. I've been using them for ages until last month when my contract with newshosting ran out then i never bothered renewing it really since i didn't really use it that much anymore.

For Fruity Loops/Photoshop etc. I use LImewire to download them.

If usenet/Newsgroups are just forums (I imagine ?) how come they're so much faster ?

It's over HTTP rather than anything else, which ISPs can't throttle or packet shape. I think. There's probably a better answer.

Cos theyre hosted on fat pipes, rather than relying on Joe Public to be seeding Lost for you!

QoS (traffic shaping to you) can be performed on any type of traffic. The trick is identification of what traffic to traget.
