I don't want to be a dick but thats rubbish.

Granted, venues will not let promoters hire them on nights when they have a weekly committment etc. Like - you couldn't hire out The Empire on a Saturday night because obviously there is Metropolis that night. But if its sat empty making no money on say a tuesday.. then why not?

Regular promoters get preference, and more favourable rates for hiring the venue etc. But you can bet your ass that if you offer any venue money to hire them out on a night when they usually have nothing going on they are going to go for it.. unless they think your idea is shit!

I don't know why people have to get snobby about these things. Surely if someone wants to put a gig on in Middlesbrough then thats a good thing right? why would you want to stop them? You can promote the hell out of your gigs at theirs with them being at the same venue.

Why don't you have a talk to the guys running this battle of the bands and be one big happy family?

^ this.

martin - I could see your point if cornerhouse was a venue, but it isnt - its a nightclub that TFT turn into a venue Wink Look at the Empire, Town Hall, Arena, Kubar, Arc etc. Ultimately regardless of its useage, a venue us a place to hold an event. Unless you have something planned for that day, I really cant understand why you would think a venue would turn away potential money in their pocket just because it's not coming from you. Doing so risks alienating the venue to one particular crowd, as you cant promote to everyone and cover every genre.

The reverse of the coin is also true. Successful companies like Ten Feet Tall put clubnights and gigs on a variety of venues, rather than sticking to just one, because some people go to one place and not others, and they can scale events to fit the venue. Why should a venue have these kind of terms, yet the promoter can put things on anywhere? What would TFT be like if they could ONLY use cornerhouse or empire? What about all their comedy? larger bands? etc
